Dr. Janice Samuel-Powell, Children’s, Youth and Families Director

Dr. Janice Samuel-Powell or “Dr. J” as she is called affectionately has been serving in ministry for over 25 years. With a passion for praise & worship youth discipleship, teaching and intercessory prayer she loves using her gifts to help others to discover their unique gifts. An educator, coach and leader by profession, Janice has utilized her skills and education in ministry in unique and effective ways.

Janice has served in multiple ministries. She has served on the Praise & Worship Team, as a Sunday School Teacher, Children and Youth Coordinator, Children’s Church Superintendent, Vacation Bible School Director & Curriculum Writer, Bible Study Leader and Prayer intercessor. In 2021, Janice received the call from the Lord to preach. Feeling unequipped, unworthy and unaccepted, she did not answer. Janice felt that due to her past mistakes and poor choices, no one would trust or support her as a pastor. Janice experienced a defining moment where she could no longer ignore the undeniable tug on her heart by the Holy Spirit. She then surrendered to God’s call to preach, shifting from participant to proclaimer. Janice became an ordained as a Pastor in 2023.

The Holy Spirit has provided Janice with extensive ministry training and opportunities to grow in her calling. Janice loves being a student and learning new things. She has earned eight college degrees! Janice holds two Bachelor’s degrees, one in Health Science & Psychology from Mercy College and a Bachelor’s in Divinity from Christian Alliance. She holds two Masters Degrees in Education & Special Education from Mercy College, one Master’s degree in Business and Organizational Leadership from Nyack College and Masters’ in Curriculum & Instruction w/Biblical Emphasis from Colorado Christian University. Lastly, Janice holds a Doctorate in Education from Seton Hall and a Doctorate in Psychology from Breyer State Theological University.

Janice lives in Dumont, NJ and is the mother of three children who she enjoys spending her free time with. Janice also teaches college courses in psychology at various universities, teaches a weekly bible study for women, and enjoys shopping and travel.

Janice is excited to be joining UMC as the YCF Director. Her goal is to create a safe, welcoming environment where children & youth can feel safe asking the tough questions and encouraged to grow into bold, confident followers of Christ. Janice hopes to preach messages of hope, healing, and spiritual growth, ensuring that every person who walks through the doors of the church feels welcomed and equipped.
